Why safer matters
You might not think that the products you put on your skin, your kids or what you clean you home with matter, but it matters more than ever!
There are so many health concerns with the products on the market today because there is a huge lack in regulations. We cannot trust everything that’s on the market and we have to be our own advocates until this issues is fix, or at least made better. Right now there are only 30 ingredients banned in the U.S., 600 in Canada and 1,400 in Europe.
The average woman uses 12 personal care products each day, which is about 168 different chemicals. Many of these products sit on the skin all day or night and can be absorbed into the bloodstream within minutes. Kind of scary when you think about it.
What’s even scarier to me is that many people are putting these products on their children. They are at such an important stage of their lives and development. What we do now could really affect their lives later down the road. Think about all the girls that are starting their periods earlier and earlier, or the rise in infertility. I truly believe this is all linked.
One other things I want to mention about our kids is that what we put on our face is also coming in contact with them. Just think about all the kisses and snuggles up against your face you give them each day. Your products can transfer onto them.
Something else that really hit home for me was the concern about products when a woman is pregnant. Shouldn’t we be concerned all the time, whether or not we are carring a child. Why would putting harmful ingredients be okay when we are not carrying a child?! Think about that one for a minute.
Now there are so many things in our environment that we cannot control, so making changes to the things we can control can make an impact on our overall health.
If you have an illness, skin irritations, acne, allergies, asthma, or anything other health concern (I have hashimotos) you should really consider making some changes to the products you use, and what you eat sooner than later. I hardly have any the issues I used to have with my skin since swapping out for safer options and making changes to my diet has been life changing for my autoimmune disease.
My journey to low tox living has never been a race, but about making educated and slow changes all throughout our home. This has made it a manageable process and didn’t break the bank since I have done it over time.
Safer does not automatically mean expensive. I do spend more on some products, but others I save a lot on. I have also found that a lot of products last longer than what I was using prior to switching.
I also find it helpful to find companies you know and trust. I usually stick within a handful of them to make things easier. Some of my favorites are Beautycounter, Primally Pure, Everyone, Young Living, Seventh Generation.
I’ll be sharing all kinds of products and swaps, and even some easy DIYs for safer products we use and love.
When we know better, we can do better. Educate yourself and take that knowledge to make better choices for yourself and your family!
